Can you imagine being so passionate–so consumed–by something that you write a poem using each letter of the alphabet as a stanza heading? Then under each letter, you write 8 lines that all begin with that letter. For example, you begin with A as a heading, and then you write 8 lines that begin with A. You move to B and go all the way to Z.
That’s what Psalm 119 is in Hebrew! The author uses the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet and passionately pours into these letters and words his heart. He is consumed by the word of God! It provides him peace, joy, and confidence. He wants, it seems, to embody these words in every aspect of life.
The author’s loving desire is a foreshadowing of how we should feel about the Word who became flesh. John 1:1,2, 14:
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.”
“The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
Jesus literally embodied everything God desires in us. He came to show us what Scripture looks like in flesh. He becomes the living Word of God. Matthew 5:17:
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.”
Jesus is the ultimate expression of everything God wants in us, and he summarizes it in two thoughts:
1. Love God with all that you are and have.
2. Love others as you love yourself.
So...read your Bible daily, read it through a relationship with the Word who became flesh, and always be a loving expression of who God is.
