Don't Leave Room for Excess

In 1 Corinthians, the Apostle Paul addresses the issue of idolatry. What do you think of when you hear the word “idolatry?” My mind instantly goes to the story of the Israelites and the golden calf from Exodus. Oh, how quick we are to forget and easy to turn astray.

Idolatry is not only the worship of physical idols or false gods as we often see in the Old Testament. It is anything that we choose to put before our love of God. Merriam-Webster defines the verb “idolize” as: to worship as a god, to love or admire to excess.

Idolatry can take many forms. In our ever-connected world, it is easier to fall into it than we may think. Idolizing sports teams, the person that seems to have the perfect life on social media, the newest popular actor or actress. Less tangible things such as power, approval, comfort, or control.

As Christians, we must be careful not to let these things or people become an idol in our lives, excess. We must evaluate where our priorities lie, ensuring that we are putting God first in everything that we do. If the Lord is our center, we shouldn’t have room for excess. Let us be mindful of our influence on others as we strive to be a positive example of faith and devotion to God. How can you make certain that you are keeping your eyes on the Lord this week?

"Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things" (Philippians 4:8)
