Don't Wait to Slow Down

My husband recently had Achilles tendon rupture repair surgery. These past four or five weeks have been quite the journey. He started in a splint and then a cast and could not bear weight on his right foot at all. He is now in a boot and re-learning how to walk, basically. Since it’s his right foot, he’s also not been able to drive for the past five weeks. The recovery has been slow, and the most challenging part has been the frustration he’s felt as he’s not been able to move around or do many things that he likes to do. The way that he shows love to my daughter and me is through acts of service, and that has been difficult for him, allowing me to be the one to take out the trash and clean the kitty litter, for example.

Each week of this recovery, he's improved and recovered, even if it doesn't feel like it at the moment.

Whenever I look at him and think about his frustration this month, I feel for him. Not just for me, taking out the trash, but for him. But every time I have sat down and thought about all of the ways he has taken care of us, even in the midst of this injury, I am in awe of his dedication to his family and his faith. He hasn't stopped finding ways to connect to God. If anything, he's found more ways to do so. He's experienced a bit of a heart transformation without even realizing it. And I have experienced a deeper gratitude for how he leads and takes care of our family.

Don't wait for an injury to slow down and spend time with God. Don't get so "busy" that prayer becomes a "when I need to pray" thing. Don't lose heart when you are frustrated with your situation. God might just be working on your heart, or someone else's in your presence in ways you can't yet see or understand.
