How Do You Eat an Elephant?

Aug 23, 2023

There have been times when I've felt overwhelmed by things that were primarily out of my control. It was hard to know what to do.

In one of those situations years ago, I decided the first step was to do no harm. Don't do anything or say anything that will make things worse. While I do not always succeed, it is a good approach and a good place to start.

Then, try to determine what you can do. What is the next step–no matter how small–I can take? This little playful conversation comes to mind often:
“How do you eat an elephant?”
“One bite at a time.”

If we break large seemingly insurmountable problems into small manageable steps, we can make progress. Of course, rooting this approach in prayer makes the process surprisingly peaceful.

Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life. –Philippians 4:6,7 The Message.

I hope you have a good day! Take the next step–do it.
