Let Me Check My Calendar

May 7, 2024Carly Powell

Rest. Easier said than done sometimes, am I right?

I am a list, tasks checked off, calendar-preparer kind of person. You want to know where I am specifically? Check the calendar on my phone. You want to know the bigger picture of where I might be and what larger task needs done that day? Check the dry erase calendar on my fridge. You want to know what’s for breakfast, lunch, or dinner for the entire week at my house? Check the wet erase board on the counter. Do you see where I am going with this? There’s no shortage of calendaring in my life. Sometimes, if I am not at home and a plan changes, even for something 3 weeks from now, and my husband is home, I will text him and ask him to update the fridge calendar so all calendars match. Please tell me there is at least one of you reading this that can relate. Just one?

Is that overboard? Probably. But I think I find a lot of peace in planning. God isn’t calling me to stop planning or calendaring. BUT I know for a fact that He calls me to rest.

Truly my soul finds rest in God;
my salvation comes from him.
Psalm 62:1

He calls me into true sabbath rest. Maybe my rest doesn’t look like your rest. Maybe my rest means I don’t plan the week’s menu at that very moment or find more events for my daughter and I to attend that week. Maybe my rest is sitting on the back deck, playing with her, not thinking about much at all. It’s challenging. If you are a mom, a daughter, an aunt, really a woman in general, you know it’s hard to turn off your mind. It literally NEVER STOPS. But God wants to find us in that calm quiet place. He wants to fill our mind with more of Him and less “plans.” How are you going to find Him and find rest? I am challenging myself to leave space in my calendar. Space for the Holy Spirit to fill.

-Carly, I will get back to you after I check my calendar
