Peace & Rest To You

If music is all sound with no pauses, we will probably change the station. Sometimes the most important part of a song is the silence between the notes. In a movie, sometimes the quiet parts communicate the most meaning. In life, often we learn the most, listen the most and live better the most when we intentionally turn off the noise, set down the phone, turn off the TV, log off the computer, take out the earbuds and practice the art of being still before the Lord. For those of us who have developed a lifestyle of running 90 miles an hour with our hair on fire, this is extremely difficult to do. Over time, I have added productivity to the list of the fruits of the Spirit, but upon further review I notice that even in the most progressive translations it has not really been added to Holy Scripture. So, practicing Sabbath rest is not a rhythm that I am familiar with but am willing to try. It will not be easy. It takes faith to trust that God can handle the world even if I am not whirling about, getting things done, checking things off the list. It will take a new perspective. Sabbath rest is not sinful slothfulness, it is actually one of the 10 Commandments. And finally, if this is going to happen, I will have to be intentional in setting aside protected time, space and place to make it happen. Otherwise, the tyranny of the urgent will override my best intentions. May we all find this Sabbath rest. So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, for whoever has entered God's rest has also rested from his works as God did from his. Hebrews 4:9-10 Peace & Rest, Jeff
