The Slippery Slope

Create in me a clean heart Oh God and renew a right spirit within me.

From time to time, we all need a wakeup call. It is so easy to slip into a spiritual slumber, lacking self-awareness, where we find ourselves distracted by the things of this world, the busyness of life, the comforts and pleasures, accomplishment and accumulation that we chase after. Or we may be directing our efforts and energies to avoiding pain, conflict, problems, tension or any uncomfortable situations. David was in this spot. The wrong spot at the wrong time. It is no sin to walk around a palace balcony…but the other kings were off fighting battles. It is no sin to look out over the city…unless the motives of your heart are less than pure. It is no sin to accidentally see a woman bathing…unless you allow your gaze to tarry there. Unless you come closer to get a better view. And you start the DVR of your mind. And you allow your imagination to jump start the bad idea part of your brain. And you allow your mouth to start talking crazy stuff. And you close your ears to the wise counsel of others. Now you have put yourself on a very slippery slope.

Cast me not away from your presence Oh Lord, take not your Holy Spirit from me.

But David, even after all of his failures, was still considered a Man after God’s Own Heart. No matter what you do, there is no sin too big for God to handle. He is full of grace and mercy.

Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation. And renew a right spirit within me. If you don’t know the song, Create in Me a Clean Heart by Keith Green, Google it. It may be what you need to hear today. I need it every day.
