Vulnerability in our Culture

Jun 23, 2023

I sat in a room full of women on Wednesday night. We all had our Bibles and were ready to explore the question, “Why do bad things happen to good people?” We shared scripture, dug into what the Bible says about this question and had a powerful and thoughtful conversation. But as I look back on this, the thing that sticks out to me the most is the willingness of others to be vulnerable. When I left that night, I felt closer to the women that were there, and I was incredibly thankful for their willingness to be vulnerable and invite others into their story.

Vulnerability is the willingness to show up and be seen with no guarantee of outcome.

“In our culture, we associate vulnerability with emotions we want to avoid, such as fear, shame and uncertainty. Yet we too often lose sight of the fact that vulnerability is also the birthplace of joy, belonging, creativity, authenticity, and love.” – Brene Brown.

An important thing that we can take with us into situations of vulnerability is our trust in God’s plan. If God gives us the space and the boldness to be vulnerable with others, then our vulnerability will not be wasted. So be vulnerable. Trust God. And watch joy, belonging, creativity, authenticity, and love come to life around you.
