Exodus 1
Exodus begins where Genesis ends. I believe that Moses authored this book and in chapters beyond today’s scripture find Moses as the key player. Since Exodus 1 occurred before Moses, we must assume that the story was told by him as he had heard it conveyed by those whom would have had access to history.
Since Moses is summarizing the events leading up to Egypt’s deliverance from slavery and a focus on our God proves again that He is our Redeemer. The first chapter provides us an overview of how God’s chosen people began to prosper in Egypt under the rein of Joseph. Years pass, all of Jacob’s sons and future generations have since passed, but the Israelites continue to prosper as well as multiply.
Ruler’s change and lives change.
The pivotal verse is Exodus 1:8:
“Then a new king, to whom Joseph meant nothing, came to power in Egypt.”
A shift of power causes the Egyptian leadership to grow concerned with the increasing number of God’s people and fear that their allegiance will be against them.
The Israelites are oppressed, but continue to multiply. The leadership demands that the mid-wives kill all newborn males, but we see the mid-wives saving the males out of faithfulness to God. God blesses the midwives with families of their own.
