"Jesus wept." John 11:35 is known as the shortest verse In the Bible. While it may be short, this verse shows the compassion of Jesus and the deep friendship that he shared with sibling Mary, Martha and Lazarus.
Jesus was ministering in another town when Lazarus fell sick. But it was apparent that they were close friends as the sisters summoned Jesus to come. I imagine that this was similar to our 'calling the family in' to come say their goodbyes as the end of life is near. I'm certain that the sisters had seen plenty of Jesus' healing and miracles that they wanted him to perform a miracle in their own family. When he finally heads their way, Martha meets Jesus on the road and tells him the bad news, that he is too late to heal Lazarus. If only he had come sooner. Mary, perhaps the more emotional sister, comes to Jesus weeping, falling to his feet and says “Lord, if you had been here…” Seeing his friends overwhelmed with grief touched the core of Jesus and out of compassion and empathy he cried alongside them. He did not dismiss their sorrow or scold them for their lack of faith. The eventual raising of Lazarus was not just for the grieving sisters and friends but for them to see His glory and that others might also believe.
Jesus knows what we are going through, He weeps when we weep and rejoices when we rejoice. He walks through the mountains and valleys with us. But He has a plan and knows how it will all work out if we just trust him. No matter how it appears to us, Jesus is never late, and his timing and plans are perfect for us and for his ways.
