There is no parable that paints a picture of God’s Grace more than that of the Prodigal Son found in Luke chapter 15. The story of the lost Son is one that needs little explanation and one that all Christians should understand. It’s a story of rebellion, sin, forgiveness and restoration.
Society today is the Son who leaves his Father’s home in search of all the World has to offer. As the Son is lured away from home to squander his inheritance, Society is lured away from a relationship with its Creator. Paul tells us in Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”. In other words, we have all left home and allowed the temptations of this World to lure us away from the Father.
What the Father did through Jesus is offer us a way back home. Like the Father in the parable, God desires that none be lost, not one, and he eagerly awaits our return. The Son in the parable is restored to his place and the Father’s love is demonstrated through the killing of the fattened calf and the ensuing festival to celebrate the return of his lost Son.
If you’ve wondered far from home, the Father is waiting. If you’re wealth is being squandered on the material possessions of this World, the Father is waiting. If the World has captured you with its sinful pleasures, the Father is waiting. You don’t have to be lost anymore. Restoration with the Father comes through his Grace. Know his Son and know his love as he eagerly awaits your return home.
