Read Proverbs 10

When I first read through this chapter of wisdom literature I found myself feeling rather overwhelmed by the incredible depth and breadth of content contained therein. You see, each single verse has contained within it such immeasurable wisdom, that meditating on one verse alone could provides deep insight. After reading through this chapter multiple times I begin to discover four major themes being addressed.

THEMES

1) Condition of the heart

2) Speech

3) Work, wealth, and poverty

4) Integrity

For those whose hearts are fixated on the things of God, The following conditions will be found: The fear of the Lord, the hope of the righteous, a wise heart which receives commands, and love that covers all transgressions.

A natural outgrowth of a heart that surrenders to God is speech that builds up rather than tears down. In this chapter we are told that, the tongue of the righteous is as choice silver, the lips of the righteous bring forth what is acceptable, and that on the lips of the discerning, wisdom is found. While it is absolutely critical how we maintain the condition of our heart and communicate with our mouth, it is also fundamental to the Christian life to do good work. In this chapter we are told that the hand of the diligent and the blessing of the Lord makes rich, that ill-gotten gains do not profit, and that if we are to act as wise children of Heavenly Father we must commit ourselves to working well.

When our heart is right, our speech will reveal our inward condition. Excellence of the heart, speech, and the way we conduct our work/careers will give rise to a testimony of integrity. In verse 9 of this chapter we are told that, "He who walks in integrity walks securely...". So what then is the whole of the matter?

Purify your heart, purify your speech, do good work, and the integrity of your person will influence many for the Kingdom of God!
